When to have a mammogram
Most doctors recommend that all women have annual mammograms starting at age 40. Women younger than that who have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors should follow a doctor's advice about when to have mammograms.

Preparing for mammograms
Dress comfortably in a two-piece outfit, because you'll need to be undressed to your waist. On the day of your mammogram, don't use any deodorants, powders, or creams on your breasts or underarms, as they many interfere with the image.

A brief procedure
Most mammograms take just a few minutes, during which two views of each breast are made by a technologist who is supervised by a radiologist. Each breast will be placed between two plates. The x-rays will be analyzed, and the radiologist will send your doctor a written report.
